Five Finger Breathing to Allay a Panic Attack*
APRIL 2026
by Lisa Robbins

Feeling overwhelmed and anxious? Here is physical and mental exercise to calm you.
Sit quietly and focus on your breath before you start. The more you practice, the more your body will find the path to stop a panic attack.
Make a star by spreading the fingers of one hand. Now, take the index finger of the opposite hand and gently trace up the outside of your thumb as you breathe in. On the out breath, trace gently down the inside of your thumb. Continue to the next finger.
Swap hands and repeat.
Add a pause
Next try adding a short pause at the tip of each finger and at the base. If you practice this regularly it will slow your heart rate, calm your breathing and allow you to relax.
Try extending the pauses next time.
This exercise can bring you out of the ‘Fight, Flight Fear’ response.
Remember to swap hands…
Teach this to your anxious daughter or your fretting son; it nicely combines thought and action to change the channel.
