REGENERATION

By Dr. Elena Speranza Moll

Dear WINners,

The goal and dream for 2026 is: Regeneration!!

Sometimes mistaken for reproduction. But that is incorrect.

When a lizard looses its tail, it can regenerate or grow a new one. And I have come back from holidays feeling totally regenerated, physically and mentally….

I have certainly not replicated myself. It is not that there are now 2 Elenas. (!!)  Just like there is only still one lizard, but with a totally new tail.

All life forms and creatures usually have the capacity to repair lost body parts, if the damage is not too big. It’s a recovery process.

In my profession regeneration refers to the jawbone and the dental & facial soft tissues. Enamel however can not grow back, because it has no cell turnover, which is the second condition of regeneration.

Question 1: Why do jawbone and gums disappear?

Because over time we physiologically simply have slower bone metabolism and slower cell turnover in our whole body. Just like the muscles of our face and skin. It all thins out. This is worse when a tooth is extracted, the bone looses it’s function and withdraws and gets even thinner.

At Studio Moll we regenerate bone (GBR) using bone graft material mixed with your own bone particles as a scaffold. Covered by a special resorbable membrane as if a tent is created under which your own bone cells will substitute the graft and form new, healthy bone, and a strong foundation for dental implants or preventing facial collapse after tooth extraction.

When I have to resolve bone defects near or along a tooth, I prefer to use a bone inducing gel to guide the supportive tissues of the teeth which is called Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)

Question 2: When do we need to regenerate bone and soft tissues?

1/ Prevention After Tooth Loss of the jawbone shrinking and resorption which always happens because  it is no longer stimulated. Like an unused muscle that looses volume.

2/ For Dental Implants because they need sufficient bone for stability, to support dental forces (up to 100kg / mm2) while chewing.

3/ Gum Disease treatment: Severe gum disease can destroy bone and soft tissues, requiring regeneration to restore tooth support.

4/ In Aesthetics, to prevent sunken facial appearance and wrinkles. With the loss of canines or bicuspids there is bone shrinkage and loss of dental lip and cheek support. Building up the bone would be a surgical option. I prefer to do it immediately with the extraction procedure. Keep in mind however that the implants do not provide a bulging and cheek supportive bone contour the root once gave.

Therefore we use the less invasive second option in these cases: Hyaluronic acid fillers, we apply to nurture the skin Regenerating collagen, and lift up a sagging appearance. With these treatments deep folds become smoother, volume is restored, and the face looks more lifted and youthful, requiring filler for volume loss and eventually Botox to relax the muscles.
