“I have DEEP POCKETS!!”

Good for you!!…. Or maybe not so???? If you have abundant financial resources :), which I hope you do, you are fortunate.

But if that is not the case, you probably suffer from SEVERE PERIODONTAL DISEASE 🙁

Let me explain.

In a healthy mouth, gum tissue fits snugly around each tooth, forming a shallow, protective crevice. Deep periodontal pockets, which indicate advanced gum disease (periodontitis), are present when this gap deepens due to infection and chronic inflammation. If left untreated, these pockets can lead to the destruction of the supporting bone and soft tissue, which can cause eventually, tooth loss.

Questions from readers:

1/Does this happen overnight?

No, that is rather rare. The journey to deep periodontal pockets begins with the accumulation of dental plaque, on the border teeth-gums. If not removed by regular brushing and flossing, this plaque hardens into tartar below the gumline, which can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. The bacteria in the plaque and tartar inflame the gums, leading to the first stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. During this phase, the gums become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding.

2/ I have every now and then bleeding gums. Does that mean my deep pockets get deeper and I am about to lose my money?!

No, don’t you worry about those fears. Usually in that stage it is easy to control by starting to brush more often on the inflamed site. And relax, your financial state hasn’t anything to do with that…

As gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, the inflammation causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating small pockets. These pockets become a breeding ground for more bacteria, which in turn causes deeper inflammation and further detachment of the gum from the tooth. Over time, this chronic infection erodes the sustaining bone in which the teeth anchor. The space between tooth and gum becomes deeper and deeper. Voilà The Deep Pocket.

3/ What are the Symptoms?

Dental Monthly fans surely know the answer to that, so I like to refer to my former articles:

4/ Is it dangerous to have PERIODONTITIS?

Yes there are systemic health risks because the bacteria from these infections can enter the bloodstream and contribute to other health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It can even result in difficulties conceiving, problematic pregnancies and low birth-weight. This is caused by the bacteria from your mouth that pass the blood barrier from the placenta.

5/ What can I do about it?

Non-surgical options include regular professional cleaning. In my dental clinic Studio Moll we prefer to work with the Laser for the decontamination of the deep periodontal pockets and Airpolishing for milder cases.

Antibiotics may be provided on my prescription only, just like other oral medications or topical gels placed directly into the pockets to control bacterial infection.

For more advanced cases with significant pocket depth or bone loss, surgical interventions may be necessary like Flap surgery and Bone and tissue grafts.

Beware of parents or other family members who suffer from periodontitis. It is transmittable. Improve the circumstantial influencing factors: avoid smoking and stress, maintain a healthy life style and take extra vitamin C.
