“I vape so I am good….”
Why would a dentist write on VAPING?!?
Well I had this conversation with a 12-year-old in my dental chair.
12YO: I vape so I am good…
DOC: Eh what??
12YO: I vape, I do not smoke… but don’t tell my mum.
DOC: …..You mean you use electronic cigarettes. Doesn’t she already know?
12YO: Nah impossible. She cannot smell it. It’s not like cigarettes. I did it the first time this summer and now only once in a while.
DOC: Ok young man prepare yourself for a harsh conversation about vaping…..I think you believe vaping is a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, and that it is not harmful. I bet your cool friends or your favourite glamour influencer vapes? And I am sure you like the fruit-flavors, candy, and dessert… So to you vaping seem less like smoking and more like a fun, enjoyable experience, right?
12YO: You got it!
DOC: What’s your favourite flavor?
12YO: Whiskey
DOC: …..What!!? Whiskey!! It tastes of whiskey? That is something… So your mum and dad and your grandfather, who is here with you, don’t know and you want me to stay silent…?
12YO: I only told you because it was on the question-list…. Don’t tell, please don’t…
DOC: Do They smoke or vape?
12YO: Yes, they do. And dad is quitting smoking, but he does both. Inside the house he vapes, outside he smokes. I stole one of his whiskey flavored vapes, but now I buy them from dealers on Snapchat.
DOC: Dealers??? Unbelievable!! Isn’t it forbidden for minors to buy this stuff? How does it make you feel. Vaping?
12YO: Well cool, I guess, I like it, it’s fun doing it together with friends who do it. But not often. I know some who wake up at night to take a puff or sneak into the bathroom at school to do that. But I definitely don’t do that. I don’t need it.
DOC: Curious that you say that, because vaping is as addictive as cigarettes. It contains the same nicotine, you know. I’d like you to know that 2 out of 3 vaping kids will continue for the rest of their life smoking real cigarettes. Do you want to be the one kid that will not start smoking….?
12YO: ??? I don’t understand.
DOC: What do you want to do when you grow up?
12YO: Influencer
DOC: Cool. Great choice…but in that case I think that you should definitely quit the vaping because influencers are very smart, and the vapes contain Lead and disinfectants that are toxic, that make your brain slow. Your favourite influencer is slow?? Like kind of “not smart”??
12YO: Noooh he is super cool… but he vapes every now and then and that seems real chill.
DOC: Yeah, but he earns money doing that. Not because he likes it, believe me.
DOC: So what are we going to do with your parents? I think you told me because you want them to know.
12YO: No, I told you. Please, I will stop. I don’t even like it that much.
DOC: Is that true? I can see it in your mouth if you lie. I can see if you vape. Because your gums change colour, you have less saliva so your teeth seem yellow and dirty. And all kinds of germs will be growing in your mouth…
12YO: That sounds gross… OK, I will do my best.
E-cigarettes were invented to help people stop smoking and having seen this coming it was sold out almost immediately to Philip Morris who wanted a piece of the action. However, as it didn’t work to quit smoking it was advertised as a lighter form of smoking. It has become very attractive to the younger generations because it is easy to hide, and due to celebrity and influencers’ endorsements, easy access, rebellion, lack of awareness about health risks, early age nicotine addiction, etc.
Very often the vapes contain more than the allowed amount of nicotine and all kinds of junk ingredients from countries where our strict laws do not count. The effect of vaporizing at 260°C is as devastating to oral health as regular cigarettes.
