I saved a Worm and it made me feel good…

On my Sunday 10 km run in my peripheral sight I noticed a worm on the asphalt. Keeping my rhythm and that of the music I arrived at the turn when I came to a dead stop… I realised, “IT WAS STILL ALIVE!”  I had seen it wiggle desperately to find a hole in the asphalt. He must have fallen from a bird’s beak flying to her nest.

I turned and saw other runners coming up who would certainly have crushed him. I sprinted back and in defence of the worm I planted myself in the middle of the pavement, defying the annoyed looks of sweaty men and women, but I did not budge an inch. I had my mission here!!! I picked up the slimy worm, which was so gross, and brought it over to the grass. Thinking: “Here you go, your second chance at life.” I then continued my run with a big happy smile on my face.

Happy, because it reminded me of the day before: when I saved a lady. And that had felt even better. She had fainted in front of me, becoming pale as wax, with cold sweat and nausea. To me it didn’t seem like a cardiogenic syncope, so I quickly diagnosed hypoglycaemic collapse and gave her the first aid she needed to prevent her from slipping away into a coma. As drowsy as she was I kept her awake by lightly slapping her face, and asking her many health questions. It appeared that it was not the first time she had felt this way, but she had never actually fainted, so she had never bothered to have this checked out. I kept her under surveillance, telling her funny stories until the ambulance arrived and could take her to the MD.

About me: This is not what I do on a daily basis. Saving worms and old ladies. I like to save teeth….

So fortunately, today I saved one. The 35-year-old young man said “Take it out. You can pull it. I need to get rid of the pain. Please extract the …. @#!ò?#- tooth!!”

After sufficient anaesthesia I did my usual dentist’s tricks to eliminate the cause of the excruciating pain. I then managed to convince him that we should do whatever is necessary to keep the tooth,

“Because you only get one shot with your dentition. You only have one of each tooth, which is unique and functional in its own way. They are not irreplaceable (implants), but still there is nothing like the real stuff. Believe me”

So the moral of the Worm-story is:

As long there is life, there is hope. Don’t wait for discomfort to turn into fatal emergencies, seek treatment ASAP. Keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong, also in the Summer of 2025.

I wish all my readers a wonderful vacation and will get back to you in September with the new DENTAL MONTHLY.
